Oklahoma VR and Scotty D. Jackson’s Story

June 30, 2017

When Scotty was first referred to vocational rehabilitation, he had been in a juvenile custody facility in Norman, OK since age 17. His counselor knew from the start that he was a young man that had a plan to succeed in life.  He just needed a chance.   Scotty has survived abuse, family violence, and experienced personal periods of anger impacting his own well-being and that of others. His VR counselor saw great potential in Scotty and together they developed a plan that has since led to him getting his GED and taking the ACT in hopes of getting into college.  Upon release from the youth program, he secured a job as a cook in Guthrie, OK. He then expanded his hours by working for a landscaping company.  His dream is to attend college.  When he told his landscaping boss what he wanted to do, he gave him a raise and plans to provide housing and a vehicle in order to support his long-term goals. He is a remarkable young man that has overcome a multitude of challenges and with the support of his VR counselor and employer he is seeing great success.
